Most believers understand that worship is not a compartmentalized aspect of the Christian experience, but rather it is the motivation--the driving force--behind all that we do and are. We exist to worship God. For years we have been basking in God's love and worshipping Him with uplifted hands and hearts. Now we need to go deeper and see that God is also an awesome, mysterious being who should engender our silent, even dumbstruck, reverence for His holiness, His "otherness." Until we are undone by the knowledge of who God is in all His glory, we will only touch the edges of true worship. Matt Redman says, "When we face up to the glory of God, we find ourselves face down in worship." This book shows the biblical record of those who found themselves prostrate before God.

Women Who Buy Sex - Converging Sexualities? (Paperback): Sarah Kingston, Natalie Hammond, Scarlett Redman Women Who Buy Sex - Converging Sexualities? (Paperback)
Sarah Kingston, Natalie Hammond, Scarlett Redman
R1,294 Discovery Miles 12 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Drawing on empirical data from women who pay for sexual services and those who provide services to women, this ground-breaking study is the first of its kind in the UK, detailing the experiences of women who pay for sex in an explicit, direct, prearranged way. Unlike previous research on clients, which has predominantly focused on men who buy sex or women who engage in romance tourism in places such as the Caribbean, this innovative research offers new and original insights into the demand side of commercial sex. Too often, it is assumed that only men pay for sex from women or other men. Women are assumed to be service providers and are unimaginable as clients. This book therefore offers a radical departure from existing scholarship on commercial sex. In addition, the book examines the experiences of couples who pay for commercial sex, a client group that has received scant investigation. The book explores women's reasons for their engagement in commercial sex services, their backgrounds and characteristics, their strategies for remaining safe and managing potential risks, as well as their sexual health strategies. The nature of sexual service bookings with women clients is also examined, exploring the types of services women seek, the places where bookings occur and the fess they pay. Finally, the experiences of men, women and trans sex workers who provide sexual services to women are examined. By drawing on our unique data and comparing it to the literature on men clients, we present our theory 'Converging Sexualities'. We argue that commercial sex is a site of behavioural convergence and that women clients are behaving in ways that could be described as masculine or feminine. Our study therefore offers new ways to understand sexuality. This book will be of interest to researchers in the field of sexuality, sex work and women's behaviour.

Prophets and Ghosts - The Story of Salvage Anthropology (Hardcover): Samuel J Redman Prophets and Ghosts - The Story of Salvage Anthropology (Hardcover)
Samuel J Redman
R920 Discovery Miles 9 200 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A searching account of nineteenth-century salvage anthropology, an effort to preserve the culture of "vanishing" Indigenous peoples through dispossession of the very communities it was meant to protect. In the late nineteenth century, anthropologists, linguists, archaeologists, and other chroniclers began amassing Indigenous cultural objects-crafts, clothing, images, song recordings-by the millions. Convinced that Indigenous peoples were doomed to disappear, collectors donated these objects to museums and universities that would preserve and exhibit them. Samuel Redman dives into the archive to understand what the collectors deemed the tradition of the "vanishing Indian" and what we can learn from the complex legacy of salvage anthropology. The salvage catalog betrays a vision of Native cultures clouded by racist assumptions-a vision that had lasting consequences. The collecting practice became an engine of the American museum and significantly shaped public education and preservation, as well as popular ideas about Indigenous cultures. Prophets and Ghosts teases out the moral challenges inherent in the salvage project. Preservationists successfully maintained an important human inheritance, sometimes through collaboration with Indigenous people, but collectors' methods also included outright theft. The resulting portrait of Indigenous culture reinforced the public's confidence in the hierarchies of superiority and inferiority invented by "scientific" racism. Today the same salvaged objects are sources of invaluable knowledge for researchers and museum visitors. But the question of what should be done with such collections is nonetheless urgent. Redman interviews Indigenous artists and curators, who offer fresh perspectives on the history and impact of cultural salvage, pointing to new ideas on how we might contend with a challenging inheritance.

This important reference book provides a non-partisan introduction to rational expectations, traces its evolution through three decades, and puts a comprehensive annotated bibliography at the reader's fingertips. In the lengthy introduction, Redman examines in a non-technical way what it means to form expectations of variables rationally, explores the concept's ambiguities, and considers the numerous criticisms the concept has raised. She discusses the evolution of the concept with an emphasis on its association with new classical economics, reviews briefly the empirical findings and obstacles to testing rational expectations and puts the development into perspective within a broader scope of economics in general. The second part provides the reader with an annotated bibliography of over 470 significant books and articles on rational expectations. A Reader's Guide to Rational Expectations will be an essential reference guide for all economists who wish to keep abreast of the most recent developments in economic theory.

R2,181 Discovery Miles 21 810 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

As the international security forces prepare to depart from Afghanistan, this Adelphi turns attention to the ability of a ravaged country to tackle its myriad security problems, overcome crippling poverty and corruption and somehow revive its devastated economy. The government faces daunting challenges, ranging from the threat of insurgency and cross-border terrorism to the difficulty of reintegrating and reconciling former Taliban figures and combatants into a political settlement. It must do so against the background of continuing and potentially increasing regional instability, with the country's neighbours tempted to step up their interference in Afghan affairs. Stability depends upon drawing the wider Pashtun community into the ruling coalition, while simultaneously maintaining security, increasing the capability of the state and balancing the interests of its neighbours and regional powers. This volume draws together expert analysis to provide a comprehensive study of the obstacles that Afghanistan must overcome, together with regional and international partners, as it charts a slow course back to functional statehood.

Bone Rooms - From Scientific Racism to Human Prehistory in Museums (Paperback): Samuel J Redman Bone Rooms - From Scientific Racism to Human Prehistory in Museums (Paperback)
Samuel J Redman
R539 Discovery Miles 5 390 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A Smithsonian Book of the Year A Nature Book of the Year "Provides much-needed foundation of the relationship between museums and Native Americans." -Smithsonian In 1864 a US Army doctor dug up the remains of a Dakota man who had been killed in Minnesota and sent the skeleton to a museum in Washington that was collecting human remains for research. In the "bone rooms" of the Smithsonian, a scientific revolution was unfolding that would change our understanding of the human body, race, and prehistory. Seeking evidence to support new theories of racial classification, collectors embarked on a global competition to recover the best specimens of skeletons, mummies, and fossils. As the study of these discoveries discredited racial theory, new ideas emerging in the budding field of anthropology displaced race as the main motive for building bone rooms. Today, as a new generation seeks to learn about the indigenous past, momentum is building to return objects of spiritual significance to native peoples. "A beautifully written, meticulously documented analysis of [this] little-known history." -Brian Fagan, Current World Archeology "How did our museums become great storehouses of human remains? Bone Rooms chases answers...through shifting ideas about race, anatomy, anthropology, and archaeology and helps explain recent ethical standards for the collection and display of human dead." -Ann Fabian, author of The Skull Collectors "Details the nascent views of racial science that evolved in U.S. natural history, anthropological, and medical museums...Redman effectively portrays the remarkable personalities behind [these debates]...pitting the prickly Ales Hrdlicka at the Smithsonian...against ally-turned-rival Franz Boas at the American Museum of Natural History." -David Hurst Thomas, Nature
